"Okay, the top photo with the Zippo....the best thing about that photo is the rider. She's balanced nicely and looking where she is going. The horse, which is not in a jogging position, but rather a walking position, should have the entry read 'walk over elevated ground poles'. The rest of the set up is nice."

Moderator comment: We discussed the Zippo mold, and I let Diane know this mold is indeed trotting, although for people who aren't familiar with current breed show stock horse WP styles, it's confusing looking. The opposite legs are in synch, trot, but it's the flat kneed, slow trot of the trend now, which doesn't look a lot like a "normal" trot. Diane commented that she would still place a model moving more naturally over this.

"The dressage one is all wrong. First, even in the lower levels where regular english attire is okay to use, the tack and rider's clothing, except the pants, should be black. Second, the rein back, which is considered something the horse should know, is not considerd a 'forward' movement and is rarely used in dressage tests. Also, the judges in dressage don't wear western clothing. IMHO, this horse and rider combo wouldn't do well in a dressage class.

These are my opinions, since I ride dressage, and am a horse trainer with 40+ years of experience."

  2. In regards to the second photo (dressage) horse: This is a really well presented and photographed entry that would not place well under me. Why? That horse is not doing a proper rein back. I've written about this topic at length on my blog, but here's the short version: The rein back is a two beat movement in which the legs move in diagonal pairs. In photos it looks like a backwards trot.

You could make the argument that the horse is moving backwards (although personally I see a slow, kind of awkward canter), but if that's the case, his legs are very out of sync. This would be a major fault in the dressage ring. Unless the rest of the class was very poor, he should probably be out of the ribbons.

In regards to the now removed first picture, here's another post that explains the difference between walking and jogging.

    Hope this helps!

  3. From Rita:
With the Reining Horse, roan, man rider blue shirt, the saddle needs to be moved back some. The saddle & rider are to far forward making it hard for this horse to move & pick up his front quarters.
